Cake balls–first attempt

My awesome friend Liz sent me Bakerella’s new cookbook and inspired me to try these cute treats.  Our reason to celebrate:  Jen’s birthday and her husband Colin’s acceptance into nursing school.  I made Bakerella’s basic cake balls for Colin:  white candy coating with red crosses using red food-safe marker. 

Then I tried her cupcake bites using pink candy coating for Jen’s birthday treats.  Then I tasted the coating (because, you know, who doesn’t taste as they bake?).  Instead of chocolate or even vanilla flavored, it was strangely familiar yet not tasty.  I couldn’t figure it out.  Peppermint?  Nope.  Strawberry?  Nope.  Finally it hit me:  bubble gum.  Yuck.  So I switched back to white “frosting” for the cupcakes and decorated them all with leftover Easter sprinkles.

Despite their rather lumpy appearance, they were delicious, and disappeared fast.

    I don’t like the Wilton’s candy coating, either. Guillard (I think?) makes some milk, dark, and white chocolate coatings that taste much better. No fun colors, but tastes better!
